Aloha HIBIKE members!
It's summer! The longer days are perfect for more adventures and spending time biking around. We hope you make some great memories in these sunny months ahead of us.
When you're biking, it's important to remain aware of what vehicles and pedestrians are doing around you, and just like a car, it's important to let others know what you're doing so that everyone can be safe on the road. One of the best ways to do that is with hand signals!
Left Turn:
Extend your left arm straight out to the side.
Right Turn:
You can either extend your right arm straight out to the side or bend your left arm at a 90-degree angle, pointing your palm upward.
Slowing Down/Stopping:
Extend your left arm down with your palm facing rearward.
Don't forget to scan (look over your shoulder) when you're biking. This helps you know what's happening on the road and communicate that you intend to change directions to drivers. If you just started cycling, it can be challenging to let go of the handlebars or look behind you while maintaining control of the bicycle. Only hand signal if it doesn't interfere with your safety!
Every May, as part of National Bike Month, communities around the world come together for the Ride of Silence — a powerful event that honors cyclists who have been injured or have lost their lives in traffic incidents.
This year, our friends at PATH helped sponsor the Big Island’s Ride of Silence on May 24th. One of 172 rides held across the nation, it served as both a solemn tribute and a call for greater awareness and safety on our roads. It was also a moment of reflection, healing, and unity for those who have been personally affected.
The 2-mile ride began at 9:30 a.m. from the Kona Community Aquatic Center, with Hawaii County Police providing an escort to ensure the safety of all participants.
Mahalo to everyone who took part in this meaningful event.
This fabulous trio headed to the Big Island in the middle of March to do some maintenance on a few stations. They managed to fit a week's worth of work into 3 non-stop days (and still had a blast doing it).
Pono, Jonathan, and Tyler are rock stars, and we're so grateful for all that they do!
